Food Fact Friday

I changed the way I want to title this, because I want to make this about food each week.

Anywhoo. So this is pretty late in the day because I really didn't know what I wanted to talk about.
So I thought maybe to keep it simple I would tell you about one thing we have done to make a change. Baby steps. This didn't happen for us over night, in fact it took most of a year to really get serious about it and to get to the point where my choices and purchases were automatic.

We cut out High Fructose Corn Syrup.

Like I said, I didn't do it over night. And I think when people want to make big changes they tend to get drastic. I've found that doesn't work well for me, slow and steady you know?

So rather than purge my pantry and freak out (my initial reaction when I started to really read up on this subject) I decided to take it easy. I couldn't possibly purge my entire pantry and fridge and freezer without great expense to my family. So we finished eating what we had, and slowly I started finding products to replace our staples that contained HFCS.

My first move was the Capri-Sun juice. My kids love those as a treat each day. But they are just loaded. Luckily you can buy 100% juice in Capri-Sun, so that was an easy fix, a bit more expensive, but I could live with it.

Then I stopped buying "fruit snacks" unless they were Mott's which only uses 100% fruit juice. But my kids weren't fans. So now we just don't buy them at all.

My BIG fight in this was the Go-gurt. My kids like regular yogurt, but go-gurts were BIG. And yummy. (In their opinions) So when I switched them to Stonybrook farms Yo-kids tubes they wasted the first box. They really didn't like the flavor.

So we held off and didn't have any for a long time. Then I gave it another go. Once they had forgotten the flavor of the old stuff, the new kind tasted pretty darn good and they have one a day. Healthy, organic yogurt without all the junk, but still in a kid friendly tube!

So, I guess the point I'm trying to make is that it can be done, and kids will adapt if you take your time. We have a whole host of good snacks that don't have the HFCS as a sweetener, and I feel pretty good about that!

Thanks for reading. If you have any questions or product ideas, let me know, I'm happy to share!

So what is the deal with HFCS? You've seen the commercials where they say "You know what they say about HFCS?" and the other person says "No, I don't" and the first person can't even answer the question? Have you seen them?

We have also cut out the HFCS. My oldest son has autism and ADHD and the HFCS makes his symptoms a lot worse.

This is such a great idea. I've been trying to eliminate a bunch of junk from the kids diets and this would help even more. :)
